Canal administrator rejects criticism from Panama government in WikiLeaks cables
Monday, December 27, 2010
The Panama Canal's administrator downplayed government criticism of the process of expanding the waterway cited in US diplomatic cables disseminated by WikiLeaks.
"I'm not going to pay much attention to those types of things," Alberto Aleman Zubieta said, referring to alleged criticism from President Ricardo Martinelli and Vice President Juan Carlos Varela.
In a January message to the State Department, then-US Ambassador Barbara Stephenson reported on meetings in which Martinelli and Varela criticized the canal expansion process and warned of its possible failure.
