Costa Rica leads regional press freedom

When it comes to freedom of the press, Costa Rica is first in Latin America and sixth globally – an improvement of ten positions compared to last year- according to Reporters Without Borders.

No other Central American country is even close to Costa Rica.

El Salvador – number two in the isthmus – is in 58th position globally.

Honduras in 137th place worldwide is last in Central America.

Finland did best among 180 countries, while Eritrea is in last place.

Pluralism, security, consistent jurisprudence, and government transparency are some of the criteria used in the ranking (numbers in brackets indicate each country’s position in the global index).
