Costa Rica’s trade unions show their muscle anew

After several years in the shade, Costa Rica’s trade unions dealt a major blow last week to the government’s model of economic development. The stevedores’ union of the Moín and Limón ports rejected offers of $137 million in pay-offs in what appears to have forged a new unity of the nation’s labor movement.

During the 2006-2010 Oscar Arias administration, trade unions and other social organizations lost much of their influence. The signs now are of a resurgence.
