Costa Rica seeks halt to Nicaraguan Canal work

Monday, October 14, 2013

Costa Rica is asking the United Nations' highest court to call a halt to construction by Nicaragua of two canals linking the Caribbean to the San Juan river near the two countries' border.

A hearing at the International Court of Justice on Monday is the latest legal skirmish in a long-running dispute between the Latin American neighbors over the remote border region.

Costa Rica's agent to the court, Edgar Ugalde Alvarez, says his country wants the court to order an immediate stop to Nicaraguan dredging in the new canals, and the withdrawal of all Nicaraguan personnel from the area.
