Crime hits El Salvador's competitiveness

El Salvador's private sector is losing competitiveness to the rest of Central America due to the impact of crime, according to sector representatives.

Crime forces new expenditures on companies, such as private security services, said Luis Cardenal, president of the Salvadoran chamber of industry and commerce.

The country's private sector pays some $18 million on extortions alone, the Salvadoran small enterprise council said.
