El Salvador declares alert for El Nino
Tuesday, July 29, 2014
El Salvador's Ministry for Agriculture declared a permanent state of alert over the weather conditions brought by El Niño.
The decision was made after the Agricultural Council of Central America urged the region's governments to take precautions for the drought.
"Basic grains such as rice, corn and beans are most vulnerable, so we recommend farmers to adjust their harvest calendars and use improved seeds," said Manuel Jiménez, specialist at the Institution for Agricultural Cooperation.
