El Salvador's El Chaparral dam to be late and costly

Thursday, August 16, 2018

In 2008, the government of El Salvador launched the contraction of the El Chaparral hydroelectric dam that was to cost $219 million and be ready by 2012.

Now construction is slated to be completed next year, and with a current price tag of $400 million, after years of severe storms and errors in planning.

The dam will have a capacity of 67 megawatts, said David López Villafuerte, president of the state power utility.
