El Salvador’s emigrants send home $259 million in January in 9.5 percent increase

El Salvador’s emigrants sent home $259 million to their families in January, a 9.9 percent increase on the same month of last year.

“The reduction in the unemployment rate in the United States was a factor that boosted the remittances,” said the central bank.

Some 2.5 million Salvadorans are believed to live in the United States. Emigrants from El Salvador sent $3.54 billion in family remittances last year.
