New highways being opportunities to El Salvador
Thursday, September 20, 2012
A new highway and bridges built with U.S. assistance have joined thousands of people in the formerly remote Northern Zone of El Salvador with the rest of the country and with neighboring Guatemala and Honduras.
The funding for the infrastructure was part of El Salvador’s five-year, $461 million agreement with the U.S. Millennium Challenge Corporation. The Northern Zone had been cut off from the rest of the country in part because of a 12-year civil war that ended in 1992.
The more than 220 kilometers of rehabilitated and newly built highway and 23 bridges are expected to reduce travel time along the route by half, according to MCC.
