Panama's tourism industry faces major crisis

During the last three years, the number of hotel rooms in Panama grew by 209 percent, but the number of tourists only increased 48 percent, decreasing the occupancy rate and leading to operators having to slash rates.

Compounding the problem has been a lack of an international marketing strategy, which has lowered Panama's profile.
