Panama sends remittances rather than receives them

Panama is increasingly establishing itself as a country that sends remittances abroad, as opposed to neighboring countries who receive billions of dollars in remittances every year.
Some $324 million in remittances were sent from Panama last year -- a 29 percent increase from 2011-- mainly to El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, Dominican Republic and Colombia.
In contrast, Panama received $211 million in remittances last year, a 45 percent drop compared to 2011.
