Phone firms request delay in Costa Rican cellular auction

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

Cellphone companies interested in operating in Costa Rica show signs of cooling their interest. Obstacles have arisen to the privatization of the state monopoly, they say.

More than one of the companies that have followed plans to auction three frequencies next month say that the auction ought to be delayed because of problems that have dragged for months.

None of the five multinationals that are interested in the auction is prepared to state categorically it will refuse to invest in the country. But most of them agree that the problems in the process has made it a risky business.
